Windows to the Inside
When It's All About the Effort
Many thanks to those of you who have contributed money to my next film project. It is a sequel to my film YUP. You can support this campaign at the link below by donating or sharing:
Last Sunday, my band Ancestral Tongue and I hosted our annual show at the French House in Nashville. That show filled my heart with healing gratitude. It was a rousing, joyful, and tear-stained affair that brought in many folks from near and far.
A few of those folks signed on to subscribe to WPR.
For those of you who are new here, welcome to these wide open spaces where pianos roam. This is where I let my hair down and where the intervals between cadences are as vast as an ocean. I hope you enjoy passing through these parts whenever you get a quiet moment.
As this issue travels to your inbox, I will likely be on an airplane heading to Huntington, WV, to visit a friend for a few days. I hope I get a window seat so that I can almost feel the clouds touching my face.
This week, I give you my semi-regular offering of visual art I have made recently.
My windows are open.
Let the sunlight in.
COLOR NOTEBOOK
Regular visitors here know that I have been quite fond of sunscapes lately. The only time I can remember looking directly at the sun was during a full solar eclipse, which was magical in and of itself. Otherwise, warmth and light from the sun always makes me smile. (I also love looking at sunsets.) I took a more abstract approach with the drawing below by layering it with warm tones and lots of texture.
ABSTRACT FLOWERS
It will not be long before I have filled up my second abstract flower notebook. The drawing featured below is of a small corner of one petal. I love the textures I create with only a pencil and no color. Its simplicity is what gives it life.
LIFE

With MaxZine’s help and encouragement, I canvassed for a political candidate for the first time. In this case, we did this for the Democrat congressional candidate Aftyn Behn in the nations neighborhood in west Nashville. Everything on her platform, such as affordability of rent and groceries and more funding for hospitals (among many other issues), aligns with my perspectives.
Most of the people we talked to were very receptive, and it was not as difficult as I thought it would be. Nonetheless, Behn wound up losing her bid to the Republican challenger in what everyone knows is a severely gerrymandered district.
If we do not vote and become more engaged in our political process, we have even less of a say over how the U.S. is changing. I will happily canvass for a worthwhile candidate if given the chance. (I will get my chance next year when this same district will be up for grabs again.)
FOOD
In the kitchen, I love to bake. At the end of Thanksgiving weekend and before I headed back home, I made a vegetarian quiche to bring back to my herbivore housemates. This one featured layers of swiss and sharp cheddar cheese, eggs with heavy whipping cream, onions, spinach, and mushrooms. The crust was store-bought since I did not have time to make one.
The end result was a delicious and savory entree that tasted perfectly fine without any meat. Sigh. (I am the only carnivore in my house.)
Needless to say, it was devoured quickly.
These objects I create give me joy and a chance to tinker. I am not trying to be great or perfect. I am simply enjoying the process, and whatever results from my efforts is a bonus.
The love is in the making.
