This song was intended to be a work of art—less of a pop song and more of a cinematic lament. It has a narrative arc focused on a character who is agonizing over his existence and deeply conflicted by the fatal choices he makes in order to survive.
The lyrics of the first verse set the events in motion, and everything progressively intensifies from there.

Your blood is red and pure
Speaking of the events in motion. It is time to address the other half of this project.

Last weekend, I visited a small bookstore in East Nashville called Novelette. Tucked deep inside a residential neighborhood, it occupies space in what appears to be a historic older building that was recently renovated. This business happens to be locally owned and operated by two women. They proudly curate a diverse selection of books to sell that, among many admirable attributes, is queer and trans-inclusive. The bookstore’s walls pop with vivid colors, and I love the dragon mural on one of its back walls. Visiting bookstores is one of my favorite activities (besides cuddling with cats, playing piano, and probably not sex), and this one packs a lot of charm and quality reading into its cozy spaces. I even found a graphic novel that had a queer Samoan character in it! That literally never happens anywhere. I bought that book, and I will return to this lovely establishment in the future.
